Biography
Elizabeth Warren was born in Oklahoma City in 1949 and worked her way through the University of Houston before earning a law degree at Rutgers. She spent decades as a law professor specializing in bankruptcy and commercial law, eventually teaching at Harvard Law School, where her research on why American families go broke reshaped how policymakers understood household debt.
In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Warren chaired the Congressional Oversight Panel for the bank bailout and conceived of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, a federal watchdog agency built to shield ordinary borrowers from predatory lending and hidden fees. She was elected to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts in 2012, unseating incumbent Republican Scott Brown, and has since won reelection twice, most recently in 2024, with her current term running through January 2031.
Warren ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 on a platform built around her “I have a plan for that” brand of structural economic reform. In the Senate, she serves as Ranking Member of the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, where she has become one of Congress's most persistent questioners of Treasury officials, bank executives, and corporate lobbyists.
Heading into the 2026 midterms, Warren has taken an increasingly active role shaping the Democratic Party's direction, publicly pushing party leadership to center an economic-populist message and personally endorsing primary candidates — including several Bernie-aligned progressives — in contested Senate and House races around the country.
In the Senate
Warren has spent her Senate career pursuing antitrust enforcement, consumer protection, and campaign-finance reform. She has repeatedly used committee hearings to press Treasury and Federal Reserve officials on tariffs, affordability, and corporate consolidation, and does not accept contributions from corporate PACs or federal lobbyists.
