Biography

Angela "Angie" Nixon was born February 27, 1984, in Jacksonville, Florida, and raised by a single mother who worked two jobs to make ends meet. She graduated from Stanton College Preparatory School before earning a BA in political science from the University of Florida.

Nixon got her start in electoral politics as a national field organizer for Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential campaign, later working as an aide to Florida Rep. Mia Jones. She co-founded the Melanin Market, an outdoor market connecting small Black-owned businesses to healthy food and local resources, and opened Café Resistance, a bookstore and coffee shop in Jacksonville's Northside.

She was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2020, unseating an incumbent, and has represented District 13 since 2022. In Tallahassee she has pushed to expand childcare access, fought corporate price-gouging, and led opposition to DeSantis-era congressional redistricting — conduct for which she was formally reprimanded by House leadership in 2026 after a floor protest.

Nixon currently serves as Director of the Florida Public Service Union's Higher Education Campaign. She is married to Jarrett Morene and has two children, Natalie and Ashanti, with whom she co-authored a children's book, The Adventures of Moxie McGriff.

2026 Senate Campaign

Nixon entered the crowded Democratic primary for Florida's U.S. Senate seat — the final two years of the term Marco Rubio vacated to become Secretary of State — as a decided underdog against Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a nationally known impeachment witness who raised more than $16 million to her roughly $1 million.

On August 18, 2026, Nixon won the Democratic nomination outright, 56% to 44%, overcoming a 16-to-1 spending disadvantage through an aggressive grassroots ground game. It was the first statewide Senate primary win by a Democratic Socialists of America member in the 2026 cycle.

Two days later, Sen. Bernie Sanders endorsed Nixon for the general election, calling her win "proof that organized people can take on organized money — and win." Nixon now faces Republican incumbent Sen. Ashley Moody in a race forecasters rate as heavily Republican-leaning, running on Medicare for All, a nationwide rent freeze, free childcare, and taxing the wealthy to pay for it.
